Financial Analyst Job Description

A Financial Analyst transforms financial data into forward-looking insight that drives business decisions. Where an Accountant maintains the accuracy of historical records, a Financial Analyst interrogates those records to build models, identify trends, evaluate investment opportunities, and support budgeting and forecasting. A great Financial Analyst combines technical modelling rigour with business acumen — they do not just produce numbers, they understand what they mean and can communicate the implications clearly to non-financial audiences.

What to look for in a great Financial Analyst

The best financial analysts are commercially curious — they want to understand the business logic behind every line of the model, not just build the numbers mechanically. Test this by asking them to explain a financial model they built and what business decision it supported. Strong candidates will walk you through the assumptions, flag where uncertainty is highest, and explain how the output was used. Watch for intellectual honesty about model limitations — someone who presents every model with absolute confidence is a red flag in a discipline built on uncertainty.

Where to source Financial Analyst candidates

Investment banking and corporate finance graduates bring exceptional modelling rigour and commercial exposure, though they may need coaching on internal communication styles. FP&A analysts from similar-sized organisations are often the fastest-to-impact hires because they understand the rhythm of the management reporting cycle. Big Four audit or transaction services leavers are well-trained, have broad sector exposure, and bring process discipline. Finance-focused MBA programmes and CFA societies are good communities for both active and passive senior candidates.

Interview questions to ask a Financial Analyst

Ask them to walk through the most complex model they have built — what it modelled, what the key assumptions were, and how sensitive the output was to changes in those assumptions. Follow with 'How do you present a financial analysis to a CEO or Board member who is not comfortable with numbers?' to test communication skills. Ask 'Tell me about a time your analysis changed a business decision' to probe commercial impact. Finish with a short case study: give them a one-page scenario and ask them to outline their analytical approach on the spot — you are evaluating structured thinking under mild time pressure.

FAQ

Hiring a Financial Analyst — FAQs

What does a Financial Analyst do? +
A Financial Analyst produces financial models, forecasts, budgets, and performance analyses that help businesses make informed strategic and operational decisions. Core activities include building and maintaining financial models, producing management reporting, conducting variance analysis, preparing business cases, and supporting ad hoc analyses for leadership. The role requires both technical modelling skill and the commercial judgement to interpret what the numbers mean.
What skills does a Financial Analyst need? +
Advanced financial modelling — particularly Excel or Google Sheets — is the core technical skill. This is supported by strong data analysis capabilities (SQL, BI tools), business case development, and commercial acumen. Communication skills are critical: the ability to distil complex financial analysis into clear, actionable recommendations for non-financial decision-makers is what separates strong analysts from technically capable but commercially limited ones.
How much does a Financial Analyst earn? +
Financial Analyst compensation varies by seniority, sector, and geography. Analysts in investment banking, private equity, or large corporates typically earn more than those in smaller businesses or non-profit environments. Holding or progressing towards a relevant qualification (CFA, CIMA, ACA) generally supports higher earnings. Location is a significant factor — analysts in major financial centres command premiums over equivalent roles in smaller cities. Current local market surveys are the most reliable guide.
