A Security Guard protects a site, the people on it and the property inside it, mostly through routine that only looks uneventful when it is done well: controlled access, patrols on an unpredictable pattern, cameras watched rather than glanced at, and a log that would stand up if anyone ever needed to read it back. The judgement part of the job is knowing when to observe and report and when to intervene, and the answer is usually the former. Much of the work happens at night, alone, so composure and reliability matter more than physical presence. Licensing and registration for security work differ sharply between countries and often between states, and they change, so confirm what applies to your site before you advertise. Hire for dependability, clear written reporting and calm handling of confrontation.
Security licensing, registration and vetting requirements differ by country and frequently by state or province, and the rules are revised. Write the requirement as the category of licence or registration your jurisdiction demands, then check the candidate's status directly with the issuing body or register rather than accepting a card photograph. Confirm the expiry date and whether it covers the specific type of work, since many regimes licence guarding, door supervision and CCTV monitoring separately. Do not state in the advert that a particular certificate applies universally, because it does not.
The candidate who describes how they would physically handle an intruder is usually the wrong hire. Ask what they would do if they found someone in a restricted area at two in the morning, and listen for observation, distance, radio contact and reporting before anything else. Ask about a time they talked someone down, and about a time they decided not to intervene. Sites are exposed by guards who escalate, not by guards who report, and insurers and clients take the same view.
The written log is the part of the job that becomes evidence, so test it. Give candidates a short scenario and ask them to write the incident report they would file, then read it for times, sequence, factual language and whether an outsider could follow what happened. Reports that editorialise, guess at motives or omit times are a genuine liability. This exercise takes ten minutes and separates candidates more sharply than any competency question.
Night and weekend cover is where security rotas break, and it is the most common reason a new guard leaves. State the shift pattern in the advert, including how nights rotate and how long the shifts are, and ask on the first call how the candidate will travel at those hours. Lone night work also does not suit everyone, so describe it plainly rather than discovering the mismatch on the third shift. Candidates who accept the pattern openly tend to stay.
Security hiring involves documents that expire, and a lapsed licence can stop someone working immediately. Pitch N Hire's applicant tracking system lets you capture licence type, number and expiry as structured application questions rather than as attachments nobody re reads, so you can see at a glance who is eligible for a shift. Previous applicants stay searchable when a site wins new cover and needs guards quickly, and interviews can be batched into one day. Because contract security often staffs several sites at once, having every pipeline in one place makes reallocating a strong candidate straightforward.
