A Front Desk Executive is the operational face of a hotel or serviced property, handling arrivals and departures, keeping the property management system accurate, and resolving whatever a guest brings to the desk. The role runs on shifts around the clock, so much of the job is the quality of the handover: what the next shift needs to know about a difficult guest, an unresolved billing dispute or a room that has not been released. Billing accuracy matters as much as warmth, because a wrong folio at checkout undoes a good stay. The desk also holds keys, cash and guest data, so discretion and control routines are part of the role rather than a footnote. Hire for accuracy under interruption and a calm manner when someone is upset at the counter.
Front desk roles are shift roles, and candidates often picture a daytime counter job. Before assessing experience, state exactly which shifts the role covers, whether nights are included, how the rota rotates and how someone gets home at the end of a late shift. A candidate who cannot work nights is not a weak candidate, but hiring them into a rota that needs nights guarantees a resignation within weeks. Have this conversation on the first call and write the answer into the record.
The defining difficulty of the desk is being interrupted mid task. Give candidates a short practical exercise, such as a simple billing correction or a room allocation against a list of guest requirements, and interrupt them halfway with a phone call or a second request. You are watching whether they finish the first task correctly, park it safely, or lose track of it entirely. This predicts folio errors and missed handovers far better than asking someone whether they are detail oriented.
Describe an actual situation your desk has faced, such as a guest arriving to find their room not ready on a full night, and ask what the candidate would say first. Strong answers acknowledge the problem before offering anything, avoid blaming housekeeping in front of the guest, and offer something concrete within their authority. Weak answers either escalate immediately or promise things the property cannot deliver. Follow up by asking what they would write in the handover log about it.
Retail supervisors, airline ground staff, clinic receptionists and call centre agents transfer well, because the transferable parts are system accuracy, composure and shift tolerance. Property specific knowledge takes a couple of weeks to teach. Widening the advert this way is particularly useful where local hotel experience is scarce, and it often produces candidates with stronger systems accuracy than hospitality only applicants. Say plainly in the advert that hotel experience is welcome but not required, or those candidates will screen themselves out.
A desk that runs twenty four hours cannot afford a slow process, because one resignation immediately puts pressure on the rest of the rota. Pitch N Hire's applicant tracking system lets you keep an open pipeline for front desk roles rather than starting from scratch each time, with application questions covering shift availability, night work and right to work before anyone screens a CV. Interviews can be batched into a single day, and every previous applicant stays searchable when the next vacancy appears. Duty managers can review and move candidates from a phone between shifts.
